Psychotherapy, or psychological counselling, aims to help people by regarding their challenges as mental illnesses or symptoms of mental illnesses, which are to be treated with drugs, behavioural change, or the emotional resolution of difficult childhood experiences and past traumas.
Philosophical counselling, by contrast, views many or most of our challenges as the normal and expected challenges of being human. Rather than working on changing your emotions or your behaviours, my approach to philosophical counselling is focused instead on investigating your beliefs and exploring alternative perspectives.
Through a rational analysis of your beliefs (a process rooted in ancient Stoic philosophy), and the reconsideration of your challenges from alternative perspectives (a process that draws from philosophers like William James, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Jose Ortega y Gasset), we will work together to identify new ways of understanding and approaching your challenges–and specifically, ways that make sense to you, that fit with your values, beliefs, and personality, and that provide you new insights and clarity about how to manage and resolve your challenges.
I am very serious about providing my clients with a maximally confidential and non-judgmental environment. Whatever your concerns, I want you to feel comfortable sharing them honestly without fear of judgment.
I look forward to chatting with you!
